Christ Church, Russell, Bay of Islands, Northland.
New Zealand's oldest surviving church. The church was built in 1835 by Gilbert Mair, a former ship's carpenter, with money from public subscription. During the battle in 1845 between British forces and the Maori rebels, Rawiti and Hone Heke, the church became the centre of fighting and received a number of bullet holes. It also came under the line of fire from the naval ship, HMS Hazard, and was splintered by musket balls. The churchyard contains the graves of men from the Hazard who died in the battle, in addition to the graves of Tamati Waka Nene and Hannah King. Still a simple and unpretentious building, Christ Church is significant for its history and its setting. Source: Heritage New Zealand. The pew cushions are embroidered with scenes from Russell's past.

Oakura and Whangaruru Harbour.
Traditionally Whangaruru Harbour is a stopping place for sea travelers between the Bay of Islands and Whangarei. By 1820 Whangaruru had come to the attention of the missionaries Marsden and Rev. John Butler. The bush covered hills noted by Marsden in 1820 were systematically logged, and then greatly expanded to supply wood for building European settlements around the Pacific. By 1900 when the bush resources around the harbour were worked out, the harbour became the collection point for logs felled in more distant inland parts of the region between Whangarei and Kawakawa. From Whangaruru huge log booms were towed down the coast to the timber mills in Auckland, or loaded on ships to service the building booms in Sydney and San Francisco.Source: Department of Conservation.
